Example text

The electric force acts between particles carrying electric charge. Particles can have positive, negative or zero electric charge. ) A positively charged particle will repel another positively charged particle while attracting a negatively charged particle; similarly a negatively charged particle will repel a negatively charged particle but will attract a positively charged particle. Neutral particles do not feel any electrical force. The force of attraction or repulsion increases in direct proportion to the electric charge of the particle.

Thus, according to our current understanding, we can interpret all forces of nature using the picture of quarks, leptons and vector bosons. Of these, quarks and leptons act as basic building blocks of matter, while the vector bosons mediate the interaction between the particles. For the sake of completeness, we must mention another complication. It turns out that every particle in nature has an 'antiparticle'. For example, there exists a particle called the positron which is identical to the electron in all respects except the electric charge.

2 Forces of nature Firstly, the gravitational force is always attractive while the electromagnetic force can be either attractive or repulsive depending on the nature of the charges. Secondly, this force is extremely weak; in fact, it is weaker than even the weak nuclear force at comparable distances. The gravitational force between two protons is 10 36 times weaker than the electromagnetic force between them. Lastly, the gravitational force increases in direct proportion with the mass of the particles.
